Keynote Presenter Biographies

Frances Moore Lappé is a democracy advocate and world food and hunger expert who has authored or co-authored 16 books. She is the co-founder of three organizations, including Food First: the institute for Food and Development Policy and, more recently, the Small Planet Institute. In 1987 she received the Right Livelihood Award (a.k.a, the “Alternative Nobel.”) Her fi rst book, Diet for a Small Planet, has sold three million copies. Her most recent books include Hope’s Edge, about democratic social movements worldwide and getting a grip: clarity, creativity, and courage in a World Gone Mad, awarded the Nautilus Gold/“Best in Small Press” award. In June 2008, that book and Diet for a small Planet were designated as must-reads for the next us president (by Barbara Kingsolver and Michael Pollan, respectively). Lappé has received 17 honorary doctorates from distinguished institutions. In 2008, she received the 2008 James beard Foundation humanitarian of the year award for her lifelong impact on the way people all over the world think about food, nutrition, and agriculture.

Mike Fata is the co-founder and President of Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods & Oils. Since 1998, Mike has run all aspects of the company with a focus on sales and marketing. Mike has won numerous business awards including entrepreneur of the year (2004) and a socially responsible business award (2006), as well he has guided Manitoba harvest to be on the Profi t 100 list of fastest growing companies in Canada three years running (2004-2007). he has been on television, radio and quoted in newspapers and magazines regarding hemp foods, nutrition and sustainable business.

Patrick Lee serves as the Global Cebador for Guayaki Sustainable Rainforest Products. Guayaki has been in business for 11 years and pioneered the Market Driven Restoration business model. guayakí serves as a bridge linking consumer purchases of healthy yerba mate products in north america with indigenous communities engaged in sustainable agriculture and reforestation projects in Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Each person that drinks two servings per day of Guayakí Yerba Mate helps protect approximately one acre of rainforest every year.

Zhena Muzyka is Founder and Mistress of T of Zhena’s Gypsy Tea. As one of the early pioneers of the organic and Fair trade movement Zhena believed that by selling tins of tea she could become a purveyor of hope and a conduit for change. Zhena’s company doesn't just market products, it markets meaning, teas with a commitment to social responsibility, sustainability and the well-being of others. Zhena’s Gypsy Tea is a community minded, pro-active company and works directly with small growers and out of the way tea gardens and affects change by providing these workers with healthcare, guaranteed maternity leave, childcare, literacy, better working conditions, and autonomy.

Ed Nichols is an original founder and CEO of Sambazon. The company was started in 2000 with his friend and busincess partner because they loved the taste of the berries while in Brazil. Expanding the company over the past six years. They became the fi rst company to import certifi ed Organic Acai into the USA & are the only Acai importer that is certifi ed Free Trade. In Oct 2006 they opened the world's largest Açaí manufacturing facility in Brazil.
